Programs differ: some accept either the MCAT or the GRE, some prefer one, and a small number accept the DAT. A few have moved away from requiring an exam at all.

Because this varies, build your exam plan around the specific programs on your list rather than a general rule, and confirm it on each program's page and on CASAA.

How to choose

If your list is mostly programs that accept either exam, pick the one that suits your background. The MCAT leans on the same science coursework you're already completing for prerequisites; the GRE is broader and usually lighter preparation.

If even one target program requires the MCAT specifically, taking the MCAT can cover your entire list with a single sitting — often the simplest path.

Take it earlier than feels necessary

Score release takes time, and CASAA verification adds more on top. Sitting the exam well before applications open protects your ability to apply early in a rolling cycle.

Leaving room for one retake is the single most useful scheduling decision most applicants make.

How retakes are read

A retake is normal and generally read in context, particularly when the second score is clearly stronger. What actually costs you is applying late because there was no room to sit it again.

Treat the exam as one component among several. A solid score alongside strong prerequisites, real shadowing, and a clear statement is more persuasive than a high score on its own.

Exam policies change between cycles. Verify the accepted exam, any minimum score, and the score-recency window on each program's official page before you book a test date.
